When a collision does happen, what are your rights and what do you do? This a situation that most of us are not familiar with. It is important for everyone to know that when it comes to being involved in a collision, you can take your vehicle to the repair facility of your choice. You do have a choice! It is also important to know how the process works and how to handle the situation even if the collision is not being handled by an insurance company. Our goal is to provide you with the information that you may not be aware of that is helpful to you in this situation.

Call the police to the scene of the collision. If you’re injured, it’s important that you get treatment immediately. Even if there doesn’t appear to be any damage to your vehicle, a police report will verify that you and the other parties were involved in a collision. It is wise to keep an easily accessible collision reference sheet in your vehicle at all times, such as in your glove compartment.

My Vehicle is Not Driveable:
Have your vehicle towed to a repair facility of your choice. If you have car rental on your insurance policy, you are eligible for a rental car from the time vehicle is disabled, or when repairs begin according to the provisions in your policy. Call your insurance company to report the claim.

If you only have liability insurance on your vehicle, and the accident is your fault, only the other party's damage will be covered. You are responsible for the cost of repairs to your vehicle. If your vehicle cannot be repaired, ask the repair facility what charges will you be responsible for.

My insurance company wants me to go to one of their "Preferred" or "Direct Repair" facilities. What should I do?
Unless your policy states where you must take your vehicle, it's your choice. A Preferred or Direct Repair Facility is similar to an HMO health care plan. Some insurance companies have repair facilities on contract to repair vehicles based on agreed rates and parts sources. Collecting an Estimate:
Every insurance company is different in how they handle gathering estimates for your repair. You only need to get an estimate from your collision repair facility of your choosing. Prior to this estimate, inquire with your insurance company if they will be estimating the damage first. If they are, ask them to provide this estimate to the facility of your choice. The repair facility will take it from there: making sure your car is properly repaired and if needed, sending supplemental damage reports to your insurance company. Your collision repair facility is responsible for the completion and satisfaction of your repairs. Dropping Off Your Vehicle:
Upon dropping off your vehicle for repairs, ask the repair facilities personnel to inspect it so that all party's are in agreement on what, if any, prior damage there may be on your car. Failing to do this will make you responsible for all nicks, dings, or scratches on your vehicle.

Rental Car:
If you are needing a rental vehicle, a full service repair facility can assist you with those arrangements if it's been authorized by your insurance company. If you have questions, contact your repair facility or insurance company. If you do not have car rental on your policy, you are missing out on a great deal. The smallest amount of damage can take 3 to 4 days to repair. Most vehicles cost over $30 to rent per day. Premiums for auto rental can start out around $45 for the year. Hidden Damage:
While repairing your vehicle, additional damage may be discovered. This is referred to as "hidden damage" and will extend the repair time frame of your repair. Your repair facility will notify your insurance and if you are in a rental car, it will be extended. The repair facility is responsible for collecting the related supplemental damage costs from your insurance company.

Picking Up Your Vehicle:
Before you pick up your car, we recommend that you call the repair facility to find out what type of payments are required. More than likely, you will need to bring a check for the amount of your deductible along with your check from the insurance company. Each policy is different so please call to find our exactly what you need to pick up your car. If you have an insurance check, make sure that all payees have endorsed the check so we can accept it as payment.
